Cut Copy Paste

On Monday and Tuesday me and collage artist/illustrator Emily Evans ran workshops along side LBB with children from a local centre. We will be curating zines made from the children's work from these workshops and the other workshops they did. Plus we will be creating an exhibition of the work which will be in Dalston Library soon. Cut Copy Paste Cut Copy Paste Cut Copy Paste Cut Copy Paste
On Monday I was teaching the children how to playfully merge text with image to create interesting illustrations.

Interim exhibition

interim show
Last week at university we have had our first exhibition of the year on display.

"The Book in Context is an exhibition of bookworks created by the third year London College of Communication undergraduates on the BA (Hons) Book Arts & Design programme.

These bookworks are a demonstration of how our traditional preconceptions of the Book can be challenged through exploration and interrogation of the Book’s form.

As Book Arts & Design is an interdisciplinary subject, the student’s work on display incorporates fine art, graphic design and independent publishing, together with a drawing of inspiration from historical and contextual sources. Consequently, the bookworks are self-authored projects, a communicating and packaging of ideas tailored to the student’s chosen theme - a demonstration of books as verbal and narrative exploration, as documents, as a visual form and books as conceptual spaces.

As a result, The Book in Context exhibition challenges how we, the audience, are being encouraged to think about the way information is consumed, how reading patterns and styles are evolving and how the Book is responding to the digital age.

However, the Book as a printed artefact is still one to behold and this exhibition is recognition of the wonderful fluidity and possibilities within the Book; how it stretches our imagination and continues to adapt to our ever-changing world.

‘A book is a highly complex organisation of material and conceptual elements’ (Drucker, J. 2004. The Century of Artists’ Books)"

Artists' books on tour

IMG_3031
I'm still really suprised about this but in june I found out that I was one of the winners in the competition “Artists’ Books on Tour.” A total 925 projects were submitted to this competition and of those 50 were chosen and I was one of those 50.

"In order to bring visibility to contemporary developments in the field of artists’ books, we offer artists a platform to share their work within a unique all-European competition among book artists for the first time ever. We therefore invite artists to hand in their recent or planned art projects in the field: submissions will be accepted as completed physical or digital book objects or in the form of conceptual designs for projected but yet-unrealized book works. Outstanding works will be awarded a grant given by an international jury."

This week and so

This week I have been all over the place and haven't had the chance to share anything.

Firstly on tuesday after work I found out I had been selected to be in the Artists’ Books on Tour show and given an honourable mention!

Ive been working on a new book this week, its inspired by the never ending frustration of post. This is a book about all the weird stuff I'd quite like to send in the post (whilst waiting for post.)

.. the first thing being me.

Yesterday I went to the D&D show and went to a Zine Workshop led by Alex Zamora of Feverzine.

Piracy project

This is a sneaky look at the book I have made for The Piracy Project.

"Andrea Francke & AND Publishing would like to invite you to contribute to The Piracy Project, an international publishing and exhibition project exploring the philosophical, legal and practical implications of book piracy and creative modes of reproduction. The project includes a series of talks and a five-day production workshop held at the Byam Shaw Library. The submitted works will then tour to international venues in 2011." V&A

On friday I went to the V&A to see some of the monthly late night events. seen here.

I went to these events...
'Our floor is better than your floor' Join Invasion, an art collective from Camberwell Art College, in its big give away! Inspired by the V&A mosaic floor they invite you to take a little part of the evening home with you, but also ask you to leave a part of you behind, a trace in the form of a fingerprint. Over the course of the evening, they will create an archive, as each visitor coarsely declares his or her presence.

Dear Jon Get swept away by the nostalgia of vintage found postcards, and create new narratives with the aid of artist Jon Delgado. Exploring notions of memory, use cut outs, collage and other techniques to erase and superimpose images, and ultimately to create a whole new beautiful postcard.

and this is what I came home with..

The book in context

These are photos from the third years exhibit from last week.

Heres what the exhibit was about, taken from here.
Interrogating not only the artefact’s form, its structure and materiality, but also concepts of sequence and narrative, reading and authorship, students from BA Book Arts & Design investigate the book as a creative medium in its own right. The discipline moves from fine arts, graphic arts and design and the traditions of book production and publishing and is delimited only by our evolving ideas of what constitutes ‘bookness.’
